King Kong movie may be heading to Detroit

The next mega-movie production to come to Detroit may be a remake of a legendary Empire State Building climber, not a DC superhero.

"Kong: Skull Island" will film in the Motor City, according to what new Oscar nominee J.K. Simmons tells MTV News.

The King Kong-themed movie already has several Detroit ties. It will star Simmons, a former Detroiter and lifelong Tigers baseball fan, and is set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who grew up in Royal Oak.

The film will be set partly in the Detroit of 1971, according to Simmons, who was nominated for best supporting actor for "Whiplash" Thursday morning.

Simmons also said it will be during Tigers baseball season, so he'll be able to go to games.

Oscar nominee Michael Keaton, who got a best actor nod for "Birdman," is in talks to star in the film along with Simmons and Tom Hiddleston, who worked in Detroit on "Only Lovers Left Alive."

If the movie is planning to come to Detroit, it hasn't applied for the state's film incentives yet.

"We have not received an application or heard from the project at this time about a Michigan shoot," said Michigan Film Office spokeswoman Michelle Grinnell.
